Functional Recovery Lab™ · Stony Brook, New York

The Right Tool.
For the Right Purpose.
At the Right Time.

The Functional Recovery Lab™ brings together technologies used to support different aspects of recovery, movement, neurological rehabilitation, and performance. Technology is selected based on the individual evaluation and clinical goals—not because every patient receives every modality.

The technology is not the treatment philosophy. It is a tool chosen within the Functional Living™ approach.

Evaluation First

Start With the Problem, Not the Machine.

A useful plan begins with what you are experiencing and what the evaluation reveals. These pathways describe functional goals—not self-selected treatments.

Pain & Soft-Tissue Recovery

Understand how discomfort, tissue tolerance, joint function, and movement interact.

Cold laser / photobiomodulation, radial shockwave, FSM, and movement-based care may be considered when appropriate.

Brain & Neurological Rehabilitation

Evaluate how the nervous system processes information and organizes a response.

A functional neurological examination may guide the use of LZ30 NeuroLaser™, StimPod®, or specific rehabilitation strategies.

Dizziness, Balance & Vestibular Function

Clarify how vision, inner-ear input, body awareness, and balance may be working together.

Computerized balance assessment, neurological examination, Motion Guidance®, and vestibular rehabilitation may be relevant.

Movement & Sports Performance

Identify factors that may affect control, coordination, accuracy, and confidence in movement.

Motion Guidance®, balance assessment, and NeuroSync performance work may help inform a progressive plan.

Recovery & Functional Optimization

Build a clearer picture of current capacity, recovery demands, and the next useful step.

The plan may combine selected technology with movement, rehabilitation, recovery habits, and periodic reassessment.

Clinical Reasoning Before Equipment

Why More Technology Isn’t Necessarily Better.

“My goal isn’t to use every tool in the room. My goal is to understand what your system needs and choose appropriately.”
— Dr. Jared Leon

Modalities should complement evaluation, movement, rehabilitation, and clinical reasoning—not replace them. Some people may benefit from one tool, a sequence of tools, or no technology at all.

A Measured Process

How Dr. Leon Chooses.

01
Assess
02
Identify the Functional Goal
03
Select the Tool
04
Apply the Appropriate Dose
05
Reassess

“If you don’t reassess, you don’t know how the system responded.”

Inside the Functional Recovery Lab™

The Tools, in Plain Language.

These are options Dr. Leon may consider after an evaluation. Their role depends on your findings, goals, tolerance, and response over time.

LZ30 NeuroLaser™

What is it?
A photobiomodulation technology used in neurological and recovery-focused care.
Why might Dr. Leon use it?
Dr. Leon may consider it when light-based support fits the findings and clinical goal.
Where might it fit?
It may complement neurological rehabilitation, movement work, and recovery strategies rather than stand alone.

StimPod®

What is it?
A device used to deliver targeted stimulation in peripheral nerve-focused care.
Why might Dr. Leon use it?
It may be considered when the evaluation suggests a peripheral nerve pathway is relevant.
Where might it fit?
It can sit within a broader plan that also addresses movement, sensation, and function.

Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM)

What is it?
A low-level electrical current modality delivered through conductive contacts.
Why might Dr. Leon use it?
Dr. Leon may use it as a supportive modality when it matches the clinical findings and tolerance.
Where might it fit?
It may complement hands-on care, rehabilitation, movement progression, and recovery planning.

Radial Shockwave

What is it?
A technology that applies acoustic pressure waves to a selected soft-tissue area.
Why might Dr. Leon use it?
It may be considered when local tissue capacity and the examination make it an appropriate option.
Where might it fit?
It is typically one part of a plan that may also include movement and progressive loading.

Cold Laser / Photobiomodulation

What is it?
A light-based modality used in recovery and musculoskeletal care.
Why might Dr. Leon use it?
It may be selected when a gentle, non-invasive modality aligns with the functional goal.
Where might it fit?
It may support a larger strategy that includes evaluation, movement, and rehabilitation.

Motion Guidance®

What is it?
A visual-feedback system that makes selected movement and joint-position tasks easier to observe.
Why might Dr. Leon use it?
Dr. Leon may use it to assess or train control, accuracy, coordination, and body awareness.
Where might it fit?
It can be integrated into cervical, balance, neurological, or performance rehabilitation when appropriate.

Computerized Balance Assessment

What is it?
An objective assessment of postural stability under selected sensory conditions.
Why might Dr. Leon use it?
It may help clarify how a person uses visual, vestibular, and body-position information for balance.
Where might it fit?
Results may help shape vestibular, neurological, balance, or fall-risk rehabilitation goals.

Functional Neurological Examination

What is it?
A clinician-led examination of relevant neurological, eye-movement, vestibular, balance, coordination, and sensory findings.
Why might Dr. Leon use it?
It helps Dr. Leon identify patterns and decide whether a technology or rehabilitation approach is appropriate.
Where might it fit?
It provides clinical context for selecting, sequencing, and reassessing other parts of a plan.
Beyond the Location of Discomfort

The Nervous System Is Part of Recovery.

Recovery can be influenced by more than where discomfort is felt. Sensory input, movement, balance, coordination, and nervous-system function may be relevant depending on the person’s presentation.

That is why Dr. Leon may connect local findings with a broader functional examination. When neurological factors are relevant, the plan can draw from the same evaluation-first principles used in Functional Neurology.
